Nurses

Photo of a Nurse

I spent a lot of time in the Hospital as a youth (2nd to 5th grade). My stay’s usually lasted a couple weeks to a couple of months.
Most of this happened at St. V’s in Worcester Massachusetts.
The one constant in all my time there were the Nurses.
Doctors were giants who came into your room, pulled out stitches, pulled off gause and bandages and made important decisions about your immediate future. A bit comforting but usually matter of fact and to the point.
A doctor wouldn’t raise your head to put a pillow under it or ask if you were doing OK, not if you were in pain or anything, just if you were OK. A doctor wouldn’t ask how you were doing in school or if you had been in touch with your friends.
The one who did all these things was your Nurse.
She came in at 4:00 in the morning to give you a penicillin shot in the butt.
She brought your Breakfast, lunch, and dinner. She took your temperature and drew your blood. She would ask you why you had a sad face, and by the time she left the room, you were usually were smiling.
I was very young and I don’t remember all the nurses I came in contact with but i do remember one.
I was probably in the 2nd or 3rd grade at the time and probably in for Pneumonia or an operation for a Staph infection, or whatever.
I called this Nurse “Funny Face”.
I remember when she came into my room
I would say “Hi, Funny Face.”
I remember she would sometimes look perplexed, maybe wondering why I thought she had a funny face. She was always so nice and so caring. Maybe she thought I was Making fun of her.
Then again, maybe, she knew all along, that this young boy was smitten.
What made her face funny was it was so fun to look at. She was Beautiful.
So, if you are a Nurse and some little kid calls you Funny Face, give him a break. He’s probably  just hopelessly in love.
